Last month, at the 2017 SC Clean Energy Summit, Al Babinicz, the CEO/GM of the Clemson Area Transit System (CATbus), was presented with an Award for Outstanding Achievement and Innovation to Implement S.C. Clean Transportation by the South Carolina Clean Energy Business Alliance (SCCEBA).

SCCEBA is a nonprofit coalition of clean energy business interests dedicated to advocating for sound public policies to create a vibrant clean energy economy in South Carolina. SCCEBA recognizes organizations and individuals that have made significant contributions toward developing South Carolina's clean energy economy.

SCCEBA chose to recognize Babinicz for his work with the implementation of advanced clean public transportation technologies, and securing more than $18 million for CATbus since 2008.  His efforts have allowed CATbus to fund and place orders for 16 Proterra EV Battery-Electric busses and charging assets, the first in South Carolina.

“Al has long been the change-agent leader and transportation innovator for South Carolina, recognizing the comprehensive value for energy and operations savings that are now transforming the industry.”  said Brad Van Meter, SCCEBA Board Member. “Al’s instinctive knowledge continues to find and leverage funding to implement the evolving technologies that continue to make South Carolina the renowned leader within public transportation.”

Babinicz has 35 years of extensive experience in the Large Urban and Rural public transportation sectors. Early in his career, Babinicz specialized in transportation financing, and marketing in the private sector. He began his public service with the Central New York Regional Transportation Authority in Syracuse New York.

For the past 22 years, Babinicz has served as CEO/GM of the award-winning CATbus in Clemson, S.C. Babinicz has had a distinguished career in the public, private and nonprofit sectors and maintains an extensive record of accomplishments and public service. He has managed and operated the only Large Urban ‘fare free’ Public Transportation system in the nation and has also successfully funded and implemented the first and only ZERO Emission all electric public transportation system in the United States. Babinicz has also successfully funded and built CAT’s award-winning state-of-the-art solar powered transportation headquarters, on time and on budget.

“Babinicz work will help to position South Carolina as a leader for the mass use of EV battery-electric busses,” said Patricia Pierce, executive director. “It is our pleasure to give him this award for all of his groundbreaking work in this area.”
