Evening Anchor, WLTX News 19

When asked about choosing a career path, Darci Strickland offers two pieces of advice: Trust God, and listen to Mama.

“After high school, I attended Virginia Tech pursuing a degree in engineering. It didn’t take me long to realize that I didn’t like math. My mom thought I’d be a great journalist, so I came home to South Carolina and enrolled at USC,” says Strickland. “All through college I still wasn’t convinced I was talented enough to make it but was offered a job at WLTX during my senior year. Fourteen years and three Emmys later, the rest is history. I honestly believe that God orders our steps and puts people in place to guide us.”

Strickland is a popular speaker and presenter, a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children, and the founder of Camp Darci, a program for high school girls who plan to attend college. Designed with first-generation students in mind, the itinerary includes topics like financial literacy, goal-setting and effective communication. Each day-long event ends with a red carpet gala. The mother of three young girls, Strickland strives to set a positive example for her own daughters as well as others.

“I want to show them that a woman can be successful in her profession and at home. I firmly believe in investing in the lives of our young people and helping them realize that they are bound for greatness. If we don’t leave them in a position to be successful, we undermine our own future as well as theirs.”
