Baker & Baker: The Evolution of the Sax in Jazz Music
Jazz pianist and bandleader Noel Freidline returns to the Columbia Museum of Art with saxophonists Juan Rollan and Sam Skelton for Baker & Baker presents The Evolution of the Sax in Jazz Music, a celebration of the saxophone and the musicians who found their voice through this most unlikely instrument. The new CMA Loft will transform into an intimate club atmosphere with a concert featuring the music of such luminaries as Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, and Michael Brecker.
Rollan is a member of the Noel Freidline Quintet and a CMA fan favorite, while Skelton has worked with everyone from Elton John to Cartoon Network. Freidline rounds it out with his exhilarating pianism and smart vocals. Based out of Charlotte, N.C., Freidline and his band have opened for many jazz legends, from Dave Brubeck to Rosemary Clooney. His repertoire brings out the best of every subgenre of the jazz world, including swing, show tunes, and everything from soulful and edgy reinterpretations of Patti Page to Africanized arrangements of Simon & Garfunkel.
