Researcher to give update on Civil War sub during Lunch and Learn program

Conservationists have worked since 2000 to painstakingly reveal the H.L. Hunley

The Hunley was the first submarine to sink an opposing warship in battle. Johanna Rivera, senior conservator and collections manager at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center, will talk about the sub in a presentation titled, “Revealing the H.L. Hunley: Conservation and Deconcretion Process of the Civil War Submarine.” “Deconcretion” refers to the delicate work that has mostly occupied researchers until quite recently. It’s the technical term for removing all the concrete-like marine layers that coated the sub over the years. Additionally, conservators are examining delicate personal artifacts from the eight men who died onboard.
