South Carolina Attorney Butch Bowers will represent former President Donald Trump at his impeachment trial, multiple news outlets reported.

Butch is a native of Estill, S.C., and lives in Columbia with his wife and family, according to his law firm's website.

He received his law degree from Tulane University School of Law, cum laude, in 1998, master's degree in public administration from the College of Charleston in 1993 and bachelor's degree in political science from the University of South Carolina in 1998.

The Wall Street Journal reported U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, recommended Bowers to the former president. Graham will be one of the jurors in Trump's trial, the newspaper reported.

Bowers was special counsel for voting matters in the Justice Department under former President George W. Bush, The Journal reported. He also was counsel to former S.C. Govs. Nikki Haley and Mark Sanford, the newspaper reported.

Bowers was chairman of the South Carolina State Election Commission (2004-07).

He is best known, Bloomberg reported, for helping save Sanford - an eventual Trump foe - from being removed from office following a scandal over an extramarital affair.

The Bowers Law Office represents businesses, senior elected officials, government agencies, political campaigns, and advocacy organizations, according to its website.

The firm advises clients on litigation matters, legislative and regulatory issues, and crisis management strategies, the website says.
