“Tomorrow Starts Here” is the theme for the annual SCbio 2023 – The Life Sciences Conference of South Carolina, which will be held Feb. 21-23 in Charleston.

This year’s event will feature keynote speaker Dr. V.K. Gadi, who will open the conference on Feb. 22 with a speech titled “Carpe Futurum: Achieving Breakthroughs That Work for All.” Gadi is deputy director of the Cancer Center at the University of Illinois – Chicago. His research has contributed to breakthroughs in the areas of immunology, cancer biology, diagnostics, and therapeutics, according to conference organizers.

SCbio is a statewide nonprofit association and economic development organization that works to build the business of life sciences in South Carolina.

It is the official state affiliate of BIO, the United States Biotechnology Innovation Organization; of PhRMA, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America; and AdvaMed, the Advanced Medical Technology Association.

Other presentations will spotlight such topics as “The State of South Carolina’s Life Sciences Industry 2023,” “Transforming Healthcare Through Digital Technology,” “Game On! Brave New World of Sports Medicine,” and “Something Something New: Navigating the FDA Changing Path of Approval.”

Speakers will include Dr. Amy Curtis, Associate Cancer Center Director for Cooperative Trials at Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute; Dr. Marjorie Jenkins, Associate Provost and Dean, Prisma Health and USC School of Medicine Greenville; and Stephanie Yarbrough, partner, Womble Bond Dickinson.

In addition to speaker presentations, the event will feature the South Carolina Life Sciences Pinnacle Awards for individual and organization of the year, as well as the S.C. Life Sciences Rising Star Award for up-and-coming science leaders under age 40.

The conference kicks off Feb. 21 with an opening reception at the South Carolina Aquarium. Other conference events will take place at the Gaillard Center.

The Exhibit Hall will be open throughout the conference, and exhibitors include leaders in South Carolina’s business, medical, state government, and academic communities.
