Free Trade: BMW Guiding Principle

President Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada took effect Tuesday, with Mexico's president saying his country would retaliate with a range of moves to be announced Sunday, The Wall street Journal reported.

Canada responded with plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on about $100 billion of U.S. imports and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Trump is acting in "bad faith," The Journal reported.

In the Upstate, BMW’s Plant Spartanburg receives parts from suppliers in Mexico.

Regarding tariffs, Nathalie Bauters, head of Corporate Communications, BMW Manufacturing, said, “Free trade, which has always been a guiding principle for the BMW Group, is of immense importance worldwide. It is one of the most crucial drivers of growth and progress.”

Bauters added, “Tariffs, on the other hand, hinder free trade, slow down innovation, and set a negative spiral in motion. In the end, they are detrimental to customers, making products more expensive and less innovative.”

BMW Manufacturing employs 11,000 people at its eight million-square-foot Spartanburg campus.

The plant assembles the BMW X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and XM Sports Activity Vehicles and Coupes and their variants.

BMW Group announced on June 23, 1992, that it would build its first full assembly facility outside of Germany in South Carolina.

Now over three decades later, the BMW Group has invested nearly $13.3 billion, and the plant has gone through six major expansions.

The seventh major expansion was announced Oct. 19, 2022- a $1.7 billion investment to prepare the plant for the assembly of electric vehicles and to build a high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, SC.
