Roy’s visit to Plant Riverside District is part of his 21st Annual Art Tour, which will feature original work on display exclusively at select Kessler Collection Grand Bohemian Gallery locations across the United States.
A prolific painter who divides his time between France and Newfoundland, Roy traverses the countryside of France to capture the changing seasons, ritual harvests, fishing traditions and village life en plein air in his characteristic style. The season, climate and artist’s mood are all directly represented in Roy’s vibrant work.
Born in Rochefort-sur-Mer on the west coast of France in 1948, Roy is a highly accomplished international artist who paints dramatic, vibrant landscapes with oil paint and a palette knife. His work reflects the “feeling of the place” and celebrates the environments he paints.
Roy drew and painted from an early age and considers himself to be a self-taught artist. Since the late 1980s, a signature feature in his landscapes has been the presence of the sun, rendered in oils with brush and palette knife. One day, Roy looked up at the sun for so long, all he could see was black. He felt compelled to replace the yellow sun on his canvas with a black dot, which eventually led to his signature mark. The black sun has now become an important element in each of Roy’s works of art.
