How do you define leadership?

I define leadership as belonging to a group while guiding the group toward common goals by empowering each member.

What makes you an effective leader? What are you still working on?

I try to maintain a “big picture” perspective on any issue to ensure all opinions and input are presented without bias. I often have to remind myself not to get caught up in details to keep the group momentum on track.

Is there a mentor who has meant a lot to you in your career?

I have learned something from everyone I have ever worked with, but in particular one of my partners, Dr. Debbie Greenhouse, stands out for her absolute commitment to improving the health of children in South Carolina and beyond.

What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?

I fear the passage of time and getting so caught up in work that my family time suffers. I try to be conscientious of preserving family time and cherishing moments together.

What’s the best advice you have received in business that you wish to pass on to our readers?

It is critical to be actively involved in your business. Don’t assume everyone else has complete understanding and never be afraid to ask questions or request explanations when necessary.

What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?

No single accomplishment stands out in my mind, but I am proud to say that I am a wife, mother, pediatrician, and business owner every day. I could not do all of those things without a wonderful, supportive family and fantastic partners.

What one thing have you learned that has served you well over the years?

Over the years I have learned to always be diligent, to listen to my gut instinct and to pay attention to my own inner voice when it nags at me about something. This applies to clinical practice and business management alike.

If there is one thing you could go back and do differently what would it be?

I wouldn’t change a thing!
