One of Columbia’s downtown thoroughfares is getting reimagined thanks to Play with Your City 2019, a competition sponsored by the Columbia Design League, an affiliate group of the Columbia Museum of Art.
The competition invites designers, artists, architects and citizens to share ideas for improving the Lady Street corridor, a three-block pedestrian thoroughfare. Entrants are invited to send ideas to improve utilization and the pedestrian experience by April 29, 2019, at 11:59 p.m. The winning entry will receive at $5,000 cash prize.
The competition is sponsored by the Knight Foundation in collaboration with the Central Carolina Community Foundation. The Lady Street Corridor was selected for offering a prime opportunity for a better pedestrian experience based on a public space survey. Connecting two urban districts, the Main Street area and the Congaree Vista, organizers are hoping to improve the connection between the two, especially the crossing of six-lane Assembly Street.
Entrants should consider a $20,000 total construction budget and prioritize pedestrian, cyclist and transit experiences ahead of auto efficiency. Temporary or permanent interventions are eligible, and multidisciplinary design teams are encouraged.
