Cuban Corner, newly founded by Yaema Galguera Gallo and her Cuban family in Columbia, South Carolina, held its grand opening on Oct. 31, 2025. The Gallo family immigrated to the United States seeking political asylum and the American dream.
After relocating to Columbia, South Carolina, they identified a gap in the local cuisine for authentic Cuban food. “I love cooking and noticed that Cuban food didn’t really exist here,” Yaema expressed, highlighting how her family’s journey transformed a need into an entrepreneurial challenge. They initially tested the waters at Soda City Market, where they united as a family to discuss their dream. “We all agreed to open our business when the time was right,” Yaema said. Following a surge in foot traffic, they opened a permanent location for Cuban Corner in Columbia.
The road to success, however, was not without challenges. “We were doing catering jobs, and working nonstop,” Yaema reminisced, recalling the days spent juggling three or four jobs while her daughters were in school. The family pooled resources and efforts, embodying the essence of a true family business.
What sets Cuban Corner apart is their commitment to sharing their Cuban heritage and culture, proving that with positivity, faith, and dedication, anything is possible. “When we came here, we didn’t have anything. All we had was our attitude and a desire to succeed,” she explained, emphasizing their journey of learning about business and English.
Yaema’s key advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to maintain a positive attitude and strong commitment. “Every day we try and learn,” she said, expressing her aspiration for the business to thrive for generations. “We give it our all.”
