Recent storm caused significant damage to the Literacy SC office, including roof damage, flooding, and substantial damage to the ceiling and interior space, resulting in a temporary closure of the office. On August 10, officials with Literacy SC released a statement to the public, reproduced here below:

Dear Literacy SC Community,

Recovery has begun at Literacy SC.

This morning, our team began the difficult work of cleaning, sorting, and recovering what we can following the water damage to our office.

As we move out of the space to allow for a full assessment of the damage, one of our immediate priorities is preserving as many of our learning materials and resources as possible.

These materials are more than books and supplies. They represent opportunity, access, and the work Literacy SC has done to help South Carolinians strengthen their literacy skills and build stronger futures.

Moving Forward Together

Interim Executive Director Meredith Gvodzas has stepped into an extraordinarily challenging moment for Literacy SC, and our Board of Directors is committed to supporting her every step of the way.

From the very beginning of this recovery effort, Meredith has been in the work alongside our Board and team, helping determine what can be saved, what needs to happen next, and how we continue serving our community through this disruption.

We may not have all the answers yet, but we are committed to facing this challenge together and making thoughtful decisions about the road ahead.

We Need Our Community

We do not yet know the full extent of the damage. A full assessment is underway, and our team is working carefully to preserve what we can.

What we do know is that recovery will require resources.

We have established a Literacy SC Flood Recovery Fund to help us preserve and replace learning materials, address recovery needs, and continue moving our mission forward as we navigate this unexpected challenge.

If you are able, we invite you to stand with Literacy SC during this time.

Every contribution matters. So does every person who shares our story, connects us with a resource, offers encouragement, or simply asks how they can help.

We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of concern and support we have already received.

This is a difficult moment for Literacy SC, but our mission remains.

The recovery has begun. And we are moving forward together.

With gratitude,

Meredith Gvodzas
