Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks

Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks that resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people – 2,753 in New York City, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 people on United Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania.

The world changed immeasurably in the span of a few hours on that day, from airline security procedures to the War on Terror and the creation of a new Cabinet post, Secretary of Homeland Security.

People around the world will commemorate the events of that day and pay tribute to the people who died. Here are some South Carolina events that are planned for this weekend. All events will be held Friday unless otherwise noted:

  • 9/11 Morning of Remembrance Ceremony, 8:40 a.m., Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St. The event will pay tribute to first responders who have died in the line of duty.

  • USC Veterans and Military Services 9/11 Flag Memorial, begins at 8:46 a.m., Davis Field, 1400 Greene St., Columbia. Earlier this week, volunteers planted memorial flags forming the outlines of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the state of Pennsylvania honoring the victims and heroes of 9/11. The ceremony, presented by the Office of Veterans and Military Services, will feature moments of silence at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., and 10:03 a.m.

  • 25th Anniversary 9/11 Patriot Day Commemorative Program, 8:45 a.m., Richland School District Two office, 763 Fashion Drive, Columbia. The ceremony will pay tribute to community members, first responders, and others who lost their lives that day.

  • Town of Fort Mill Remembrance Ceremony, begins at 8:46 a.m., Fort Mill Town Hall. The event begins with the ringing of the bells at 8:46 a.m., marking the moment the first plane struck the World Trade Center. The event will include the ceremonial reading of the names of the 412 first responders who lost their lives that day. There will also be a commemorative display on the North White Street side of the Town Hall.

  • 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, 8:30 a.m., Littlejohn Coliseum, 219 Perimeter Road, Clemson. Clemson students, employees, and community members will pay tribute to the first responders who went into the World Trade Center following the attacks. Participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories, the height of the World Trade Center. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

  • USC Salutes Through Service, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Russell House Ballroom, 1400 Greene St., Columbia. University of South Carolina Student Government is sponsoring this event, which features a day of service in memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11.

  • Remembering 9/11, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Patriots Point, Mount Pleasant. The commemoration event offers free admission to first responders. Throughout the morning, the horn of the USS Yorktown will sound six times to mark significant moments from September 11, 2001. The horn will sound at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m., marking the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the crash of Flight 93 and the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

  • 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, 1 p.m., NMB Park & Sports Complex, 150 Citizens Circle, Little River. The event is presented by the North Myrtle Beach Lions Club.

  • Greenville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, 8:30 a.m. Sept. 12, Fluor Field, Greenville. Participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories representing the height of the World Trade Center towers, while carrying the badge of an individual fallen firefighter throughout the ascent. Pre-registration is required for participants but not for spectators.

  • South Carolina Remembers 9/11: 25 Years Later, going on through Jan. 3, 2027, South Carolina State Museum, 301 Gervais St., Columbia. The exhibit focuses on how South Carolinians came together in the aftermath of the attacks, and it includes artifacts and items recovered from Ground Zero.

  • Charleston 9/11 Heroes Run, 9 a.m. Sept. 12, Daniel Island. The Travis Manion Foundation hosts the event, which begins at 235 Seven Farms Drive.

  • National Day of Service and Remembrance, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 12, Florence National Cemetery, 850 Stockade Drive, Florence. In partnership with the National Cemetery Association, this event will recognize the sacrifices of military members, veterans, first responders, and their families by cleaning headstones and beautifying the cemetery.

  • Sixth Annual Lowcountry 9/11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride, noon Sept. 13. The event begins at the Omar Shrine, 176 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant. The event will feature music, food, and more.
